How To Re-create The ‘Gossip Girl’ Reboot Outfits Sustainably – Part 2

7 outfits worn by Monet de Haan in Gossip Girl

Gossip Girl defined an entire generation and had a big influence on the fashion of the 2010s. What the characters wore played a huge role in the teen drama, and Blair Waldorf and Serena van der Woodsen are still seen as true fashion icons. Two years ago, it was announced the hit series would be coming back with a new cast. Both the original and the reboot, have the same costume designer, which can only result in new iconic and influential fashion to inspire the new generation. It’s been around nine years since the last episode aired, so obviously the fashion has changed. The outfits in the reboot fit the current trends and the main characters each have their own style. Do you want to recreate their most iconic looks so far, without having a big impact on the earth? Continue reading to see some similar pieces from sustainable brands, so you can start dressing like an Upper East Sider.

In this post, we’re looking at seven looks from Monet de Haan, played by Savannah Smith. This is part 2 of a 5 part series. In part 1, we focused on six outfits from Audrey Hope. Stay tuned for the looks from three other main characters: Julien Calloway, Luna La and Zoya Lott.

Monet de Haan

Monet de Haan’s style is all about pairing mini skirts with white turtlenecks, bodysuits, checked or tweed-style blazers and bow details around her neck. As for shoes, she likes wearing heeled loafers, heeled sandals with socks and comfortable black boots.

Browse Your Own Closet

First of all, the most sustainable (and cheapest) way of recreating outfits is of course by being creative with items you already own. You can also thrift if you don’t own anything that fits the style. The colours Monet wears are pretty much the same as Audrey: mainly black, white and dark blue. She does occasionally add a pop of colour. If you can find a mini skirt and a blazer in those main colours, you pretty much already nailed the look! Below are some looks I put together inspired by her style, with things I already had in my closet (and most of the pieces were thrifted)

Now let’s take a look at how you can recreate her outfits with items from sustainable brands. The brands in this list offer similar pieces to the ones worn by Savannah Smith’s character. All the brands are featured on the website here.

Why “Vegan Leather” is often Greenwashing

Veganism started off as a diet in which any products of animal origin are excluded. Nowadays, the term is much bigger, and it has rather become a lifestyle that involves not using and consuming anything of animal origin. This means, not only a diet but also the clothing you wear. No more leather, wool, silk, fur and down. You can have different reasons and motivations to go vegan. The three main reasons are: animal cruelty, health and environment. If you’re vegan for the animals or the environment, you probably get very excited when finding brands who sell “vegan leather” items…

What Are Microplastics Doing To The Planet, People And Animals?

Plastic started out as a versatile and useful material that currently dominates many manufacturing industries, but it is now also starting to dominate the environment. Plastic products release microplastics when thrown away but also while being used. Microplastics are difficult for the human eye to see, so the potential negative effects are less visible and more difficult to measure compared to big plastics, but the amount of evidence is growing day by day to prove that microplastic pollution will have a terrible impact on marine ecosystems and human health. This 3-part series of posts will highlight this invisible threat that is entering our drinking water, how fashion is involved and what you can do to lower your own impact. In this second part, we’re going to look at the dangers and consequences of microplastic pollution…
