How To Dress Like Rue From Euphoria In A Sustainable Way

Three outfits worn by Zendaya's character Rue and some sustainable items to recreate the looks

When there’s a new TV show that takes place in high school or college, you know the fashion won’t disappoint. There have only been two seasons so far of Euphoria, but the style of the main characters has already made a big impact. A lot of the looks are not even realistic outfits you could wear to high school, especially if there’s a strict dress code, but you can still take inspiration for when you go out with friends or even if you want an easy Halloween fit. A lot of fast fashion brands have quickly jumped on the trends and you can see Euphoria-inspired items everywhere. However, there are many sustainable brands who have similar pieces as well, and you can also find a lot in thrift stores. So, if you’re obsessed with the fashion in Euphoria (as most people are), consider checking sustainable brands and secondhand shops first, so we don’t harm the planet too much with our fashion cravings.

In this post series, I’m diving into the most iconic looks from some of the main characters, and show you how you can recreate the looks with items from sustainable brands. In this second post, Rue Bennett, who has the most casual and comfortable style that is probably the most wearable and easiest to recreate. Check out the other posts to read the guides on how to dress like the other main characters Jules Vaughn and Cassie Howard.

Rue Bennett

Rue Bennett, played by Zendaya, is an introvert and a recovering drug addict who is instantly drawn to the new girl in town Jules Vaughn. Rue generally wears comfy and gender-neutral clothes like hoodies, oversized T-shirts, cropped straight leg pants, and of course her famous burgundy zipped hoodie. To recreate this, you just have to collect all the baggy tops you have (you can also check your dad’s or boyfriend’s closet) and pair them with some straight leg pants or long shorts. You can’t go wrong with a big graphic T-shirt and basic cropped black pants. Occasionally, especially in season 2, she wears other pieces like tight crop tops, dungarees, short-sleeve button-ups and cropped sweaters.

Recreating outfits in a sustainable way, always starts with checking the clothes you already own. Rue’s style is all about being comfortable so you probably already have some items that are similar to hers, like big graphic T-shirts, straight leg trousers, or maybe an oversized hoodie or sweater. If you don’t own enough items to create a full Rue-inspired outfit, the next step would be to do some thrift shopping. A lot of Rue’s clothes are typical items you can find in thrift stores. You can shop secondhand at your local thrift store or on online apps and websites like Vinted, Depop, thredUP and Poshmark. And don’t forget to also check the men’s section! Here are a few keywords you can use to find the most Rue-like items: baggy T-shirts, oversized hoodies, straight leg pants, short-sleeve shirts, dungarees, long shorts, cropped trousers, biker shorts and tie-dye T-shirts.

To keep you on the right path while you’re shopping, you can use the pictures above as a guideline where I compiled her most iconic looks.

Items From Sustainable Brands

Now I’ll share with you a list of items from sustainable brands that are similar to the items she wears in Euphoria. None of them are exact replicas (obviously) but they have the same vibe as Rue’s thrifty, skater style. All the brands are featured in the brand list here.

Your Laundry Is Polluting Your Drinking Water: An Introduction To Microplastics

In the early 1900s, a new material was created that we now know as plastic. At the time, plastic was seen as a revolutionary invention and it is currently the most used material in a lot of different industries: packaging, construction, electronics, fashion and more. It’s cheap, durable and lightweight and the number of possible applications is practically unlimited. There are however a lot of disadvantages of plastic that are coming to light and far outweigh the positives. Our rivers and oceans are filling up with plastic, affecting animals, the environment and our own health. This 3-part series of posts will highlight an invisible threat that is entering our drinking water, how fashion is involved and what you can do to lower your own impact. In this first part, I’m going to introduce you to microplastics…

What Is The “PETA-Approved Vegan” Certification in Sustainable Fashion?

While reading up on sustainable fashion, you might come across a PETA-Approved logo on products or on websites. This is a certification that is especially interesting for those of you who want to avoid wearing animal-products because you live a vegan lifestyle or for other reasons. It’s important to understand what this label means, and most importantly, what is doesn’t mean. We’ll summarize the true meaning at the end of the article. First, I’ll give an explanation of PETA and their “Approved Vegan” certification, how a brand or product can be awarded this label, and you can see some sustainable clothing brands that offer PETA-certified options…

6 Reasons Why Sewing Can Be A Sustainable Hobby

A sewing machine used to be one of those appliances you could find in every household. Before ready-to-wear clothes completely took over, most of a family’s clothing was home-made. In today’s fashion industry that is filled with cheap mass-produced clothes, sewing at home is not a necessity anymore. I’m not saying we should go back to the old times and start making all of our own clothes again. I know not everyone has time to sew, not everyone would enjoy it and not everyone would be skilled at it. But I do believe even just learning about sewing and trying it out could have positive effects and reduce some of the negative impacts fashion currently has on the world. This can be indirectly by changing your attitude towards fashion, or directly by taking control over parts of the production process and thus minimizing the impact. In this article, you can read 6 ways sewing can contribute to a more sustainable fashion industry. If you are creative by nature or you have an interest in learning new skills, now might be the perfect time to try out this new hobby…
